What is Tangletris?

Tangletris is Tetris that keeps changing its mind. Most of the time you get the seven pieces you know — the line, the square, the S, Z, J, L and T. Then a heart, a rocket or a lopsided star drops in and tangles your neat stack.

The first levels are mostly ordinary. Every level you climb pulls more of the strange pieces into the bag, until roughly half of what falls has no business being in a Tetris game at all. How far into the tangle you get is the whole score.

Everything you expect from a modern falling-block game is here: a ghost piece showing where the block lands, a hold slot, instant hard drop, wall kicks, combos and back-to-back bonuses. It runs in the browser, works on a phone, and nothing needs installing.

Controls

On a touch screen: swipe left and right to move, swipe down to hard drop, tap the board to rotate — or use the buttons under the board.

Tips for a higher score

• Keep the stack flat and leave one clean well on the side for the line piece.
• Bank an awkward shape in the hold slot instead of forcing it into a bad spot.
• Clearing lines on consecutive drops builds a combo — every extra clear in the chain is worth more.
• Four lines at once is a Tangle, and chaining two in a row multiplies the reward.
• Watch the ghost piece before you commit; hard drop only when the landing spot is right.
• Sweeping the board completely empty pays a huge perfect-clear bonus.
• Odd shapes bury holes under themselves — place them at the edges and keep the middle clean, because they only get more common as you level up.
